Yiddish poster: 1917

by DRM

The caption reads:

“Food will win the war – You came here seeking freedom, now you must help to preserve it – Wheat is needed for the allies – waste nothing.”

I imagine someone in a central office in Washington looking at statistics for immigration in 1916, while pogroms raged across Europe, saying, “We won’t be able to feed all of these people!  And they are coming here thinking this is the land of plenty!”

This called for a different cultural image for wheat.  No more waving fields of grain.  Admonish the refugees to the New World to think abstractly and demonstrate self-control.

I imagine the day-to-day life of the new immigrant wasn’t as full of nutrition and opportunity as the poster suggests.
